Vestibular rehab
Vestibular rehabilitation helps people with dizziness, vertigo and balance disorders. This includes taking a thorough history, an evaluation of head and eye movements, screening for Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo or BPPV (which is a common inner ear or vestibular disorder), and a comprehensive evaluation of balance. Treatments may include ear canal repositioning procedures such as Epley’s, as well as exercises to help with dizziness and balance problems.
What causes Vestibular dysfunction?
There are several causes of Vestibular Dysfunction, some of which are listed below:
Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
Labyrinthitis Inflammation of vestibular nerves
Vestibular Migraine Neurological conditions
Medication side effects
Meniere’s disease
What is the Vestibular System?
The vestibular system is a sensory system located in the inner ear, responsible for providing our brain with information about motion, head position and spatial orientation. Disruption of the vestibular system can involve symptoms such as vertigo, loss of balance and nausea. These symptoms can range in severity. Balance is achieved using three systems:
The Vestibular system.
Vision.
Proprioception (awareness of joint position).
These three-systems feedback information to the brain about the position of the body. If all three systems are giving the same information you will feel balanced and well. If one system isn’t working properly it may give a mismatch of information, leading to you feeling dizzy or unbalanced.
